Tourist attractions in Świnoujście - what is worth visiting
Świnoujście – one of the most attractive cities of the Polish seaside. It is located in the north-western part of Poland. It is the only Polish city situated on a few dozens of islands.
It borders: Szczecin Lagoon to the south, Baltic Sea to the north, Germany to the west and Międzyzdroje district to the east. It is because of its unique location, Świnoujście has so many faces – on the one hand, it is an important centre of the marine industry (it is one of the four most crucial ports in Poland), while on the other it is a popular seaside resort and a tourist city. The city of Świnoujście has been entrusted with the rights of a poviat (second level of local government administration in Poland) and it is one of the biggest cities in West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The total city area amounts to 197.2 sq. km, which is getting larger and larger every year due to sea currents shifting sand to the beach.
Although we say that the city counts 44 islands, only three of them are inhabited: Uznam, Wolin and Karsibór. Uznam Island houses an administrative-service centre – seaside district with tourist and resort buildings. It is where 80% of Świnoujście citizens live. The interesting thing is that only the area of 40 sq. km of the island is located within the Republic of Poland. The rest i.e. the area of 380 sq. km is located in the German part of the island. Wolin with the area of 265 sq. km is the largest Polish island. It is separated from the land with Dziwna Strait, which forms the overflow area of Cicha Madejska and Kamieński bays and Wrzosowski Lake. Part of the Świnoujście located on Wolin Island (district: Warszów, Przytór-Łunowo i Ognica) functions as an industrial district. You can find there the largest factories, which are connected with the marine industry and communications nodes - ferry terminal, couch and railway stations. The city is linked to the Rest of the Word by E-64 international highway. The third inhabited island is called Krasibór. It is characterised by perfect conditions for fishing and water sports. In the northern part, the island houses a bird sanctuary – Krasiborska Kępa . In the area of over 180 ha, there are approximately 140 species of birds including those close to extinction. The only connection between Wolin and Uznam consists of two ferry crossings, which is why the inhabitants of Wolin have every right to feel like islanders.
Because of its locations, Świnoujście is characterized by exceptionally beneficial conditions for the development of marine and tourist industries. “This is where Poland starts" – as they inhabitants say jokingly. The ferry port in Świnoujście provides regular connections with Sweden and Denmark for passengers, cars, lorries and rail carriages. The ferry terminal is a crucial link connecting Central and Southern Europe with the Scandinavian counties.
The Polish and German border runs through the western part of the city located on Uznam Island with the road border crossing - Świnoujście-Ahlbeck. While in the south-western part, there is a similar crossing Świnoujście-Graz. The abolishment of passport control along with allowing couch and car traffic had a positive influence on the city, which became more available especially for our tourists from Germany and Scandinavia.
The roads no. 110 and 111 as well as railway line run from Germany to Uznam. On the German side of the border, there is Heringsdorf Airport (12 km). Berlin lies only 160 km from Świnoujście, and there are only 175km to the Swedish coast and 150 km to Denmark.
